Saving Wildcats

a project of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland

On the brink

The wildcat is one of our rarest and most threatened mammals.

Once widespread, wildcats are now on the brink of extinction in Scotland.

A sad history of habitat loss, persecution and, more recently, breeding with domestic cats, has forced the Highland Tiger to a point where the population is no longer viable.

Without urgent action, wildcats will be lost forever from Britain.

“The thought of never having the chance to film or photograph the iconic wildcat in the Scottish highlands is a deeply saddening thought. We must value this incredible species and do everything we can to ensure its survival”

Gordon Buchanan, wildlife filmmaker and presenter
